PIAA Sportsmanship Award

The mark of great sportsmen is not how good they are at their best, but how good they are at their worst.”

Congratulations to PG Athletics for both the HS & MS on winning the PIAA Sportsmanship Award! Go Grove!

Congratulations to Pottsgrove High School and Middle School on receiving the 2021-2022 Sportsmanship Award from the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA)! This award was voted on by coaches in Pottsgrove’s league member schools, and only one school is selected from each league to receive this award. Pottsgrove is one of 12 schools in the Pioneer Athletic Conference.

Pottsgrove High School has been a recipient of the PIAA Sportsmanship Award for seven out of the last eight years. Senior Sydney Coxe expressed that receiving this award year after year has positively shaped the way our student-athletes think of themselves.

“Receiving this award says that we [student-athletes] all hold the same level of responsibility and we are seen by others to be role models, so we act accordingly,” Coxe said.

When asked to define sportsmanship, senior Chelsea Wasdick expressed, “Sportsmanship means working together amongst a group of people that you wouldn’t normally see yourself working with. It’s keeping a positive attitude amongst yourself and individuals.”

Eighth grade student Caleb Blauvelt adds, “It’s [sportsmanship] when someone is down and you help them up. You have time to care for other people.”

When it comes to embodying the characteristics of sportsmanship, our student-athletes agreed that they carry those traits with them beyond the field.

“Our student-athletes treat everyone equally and with respect on and off the field,” says senior Mark White.

“Winning this award shows that the athletes at Pottsgrove treat people with respect and carry sportsmanship qualities on and off the court,” eighth graders Sophia Reinhart and Ella Hawthorne shared.

Director of athletics, Mr. Steve Anspach, and middle school athletic director, Mr. Martin Schreiber, were presented with the award at the PIAA District One Annual Fall Meeting on Wednesday, September 14th, at Montgomery County Community College. Mr. Anspach has been the director of athletics for Pottsgrove for the last five years.

“This is a credit to our coaches, athletic staff, parents, and most importantly, our student-athletes,” Mr. Anspach said. “We are a class act and we treat everyone with respect when they come to the Grove!”

Congratulations to both the high school and middle school on receiving this prestigious award!
